Avoiding Tilt
Dealing with tilt or ‘tilting’ is an essential aspect in the game of poker. Eventually tilting happens to all the players, but the key is to recognise it and handle it accordingly.
Tilting usually refers to a state where a player lets his emotions to interfere with his aptitude to play poker. In a majority of cases, it happens in the middle of a bad streak; however it also happens while a player in winning good. Poker is a game that requires skill, calmness and a clear mind. A slightest disruption in the ability to control emotions would threaten the game to a great extent. All successful players need to keep a check on their emotions. There have been instances when a player in tilt has clearly bet in all his money on poor hands. Several players on tilt continue to make poor decisions and lose their bets consecutively.
As much as we would like to disagree, poker is not a fair competition. All those players who play higher rounds do have their own share of lucky as well as unlucky streaks. In the end, it all evens out and therefore avoiding tilt is mandatory. Tilt happens to be a natural part of the game, but the important part here is to recognise it while it occurs and limit the damage that it can cause. As soon as a player recognises his imbalanced emotions, it becomes easier to avoid poor decisions.
While experiencing tilt, it would be advisable to miss a few rounds of the game or probably wait until the next day. The players try different things in order to gain back their composure and stable their mind-set. The expert players also experience tilt and they are usually seen taking long walks, running or engaging themselves in different kinds of exercises. This helps in mental as well as physical relaxation. Those players in professional poker tournaments often listen to their favourite music, so as to get rid of the negative emotions from them after a bad beat. It would be beneficial to change the songs you listen to with every round.
There are a few ways to recognise tilt immediately. Tilt is often combined with anger and occurs while a player makes wrong decisions. Such a player is down by more money and would usually raise limits, in order to cover up for those losses quickly. This player would also play more pots while on tilt. Sometimes, an opponent would deliberately aggravate some players on the table. In such a situation, it is best to ignore and play a tight game. It is suggested that you remain quiet all during your decision-making process and concentrate more on your hand. Lastly, the worst thing to do is to play poker while in stress and it happens to be one of the biggest mistakes made by the expert players as well. While playing online poker, it would be beneficial to move around the room or lie down a bit to avoid tilt.
