Pot Odds
‘Pot’ in poker is used for the total amount of money wagered by the players in a single hand or a game. It also happens to be a short form to refer the ‘jackpot’. The main intention of all the players during the game is to win the jackpot. The pot odds are essential since they would help the players win bigger hands.
There are a lot of occasions during the game where a player tends to question himself whether it would be beneficial to stay in the game or not. However, if a player knows how to calculate the odds correctly, they can overcome this uncertainty in the game.
While referring to the pot odds, we are in fact referring to the one of the most crucial elements in poker. The pot odds are calculated while evaluating the bet to be made against the total size of the pot. For an example, if the size of the pot happens to be $20 and a player is about to call a bet of $5 then the pot odds would be 20/5, therefore the odds are 4:1. With the increase in the amount of bets, the denominator increases according, thereby giving a precision.
Size of the pot
A player must always know the size of the pot, in order to calculate the pot odds. At the time of playing in a limit room, the odds usually depend on the number of bets involved in the pot, instead of the total pot size. When it comes to double bets, like the ones called in games of hold’em, the players are required to count twice while they are on the river, which also means placing two smaller bets for every double bet. If there is a limit only on the pot size in such games, the total amounts of bets are difficult to calculate and hence the pot odds in such cases would be more of a guideline as opposed to the exact fact. However, the players can still try to calculate the odds to get a better idea on the winnings.
How to use pot odds?
In order to make the best use of these pot odds, the players must first know them for the game they are playing. Once the pot odds are evaluated for the game, they must then be connected to the value of cards in your hand. This would also include the evaluation of hands possessed by the other players and then devising a plan to predict the outcome of your own hand.
Implied odds
Implied odds usually involve a calculation of the pot size that a player is most likely to win, in case he wins. These odds are relative and are highly dependent on the evaluation that a player inputs the game with. There is a strong co-relation between the expected size of the pot and the actual pot size.
A player may not win the pot, merely by calculating the poker odds. But such an approach would help you bet in a smart manner and would increase your potential to win.
