Implied Odds
Poker is one of the most played casino games in the world and with the ever-increasing popularity; the game has escalated to a newer level of competition. In the present age of online poker, it is no longer enough to play the cards in your hand. The players must know how to calculate the odds, in order to augment their chances of winning more hands. Knowing implied odds and implementing them during the game would help players improve their overall game and increase profitability on the poker table.
To begin with, let’s understand the concept of implied odds. Implied odds are a ratio between the amount of money that a player can win during a hand and the total amount of money required to call the bets. For an example, if a player possesses around 3000 chips and calls in a pre-flop raise of about 120 chips and you are the next to place your bet. Let’s assume that you have a fairly bigger stack size, as much as 30000 chips, therefore you can easily cover the raise of 120 chips without any significance. If you think there is a chance to win the pot, exclude the opponent from your calculations. Hence the implied odds would be to divide the opponent’s coin size by the amount you need to bet – in this case it would be 25:1.
At the same time as this is a pretty simple calculation, it should be remembered that implied odds are not always easy and there are other circumstances that affect the play as well. For an instance, as a player you must ensure that your opponent would call in case if you hit your hand. Therefore knowing the opponents and their style of playing would also help you analyse the cards in his hand.
Secondly, it has to be known that implied odds can disappear very quickly in cases where your opponent has smaller stack sizes. In such a situation, you wouldn’t have many chips to win. The correct use of implied odds would be to increase your own stack by beating an unsuspecting opponent. This is where you need to know the characteristics of your opponents.
A strong player who would play on premium hands and fold to any other bets is not a good player to leverage implied odds on. It has to be the calling stations or the dealers and some loose players where you stand a chance of implementing implied odds. Finally, a lot of attention has to be paid to your own hand and the value of cards in your hand. Do not get distracted with the implied odds; there would be other players on the table doing the same calculations as well. Lastly, starting hands such as the suited connectors and small pocket pairs could also be good hands to use with implied poker odds since they tend to be disguised.
